Worsted spun in Devon by John Arbon Mill, British Breeds is available in 26 glorious colours.

British Breeds is made from four different British sheep breeds. The wool fibre from each breed adds a certain characteristic to the yarn; Bluefaced Leicester adds the beautiful softness, Exmoor Horn adds the softness too but this sheep produces a white fleece therefore adding a ‘cleaness’ to the blended tops making for more successful dyeing. Romney adds the strength and slight lustre and Zwartbles adds the bounce or springiness. To produce the yarn, the Bluefaced Leicester, Exmoor Horn and Romney wool fibres are first blended together and then dyed into various coloured tops. These coloured tops are then blended together using a ‘recipe’ to create each of the 26 base colours. Each colour base is then blended with the undyed Zwartbles fibre creating the amazing mélange effect. Once the yarn is spun it is sent to Edward Hill’s Ltd in Bradford to be steam relaxed and balled into 25g balls. The steam finishing ‘opens up’ the yarn creating the full, light appearance and handle.

Care: To care for your British Breeds garment, please hand wash carefully using a mild, natural liquid soap detergent in lukewarm water. Once washed, ensure that as much water as possible is extracted from the garment before drying. This can be done by squeezing the garment between two towels. Reshape the garment whilst damp and allow to air dry naturally.

It is worth noting that 100% wool garments require minimal washing, wool fibre is naturally self-cleaning! She tried her hand at various crafts over the years, but found her passion for yarn in 2015 when she started her crochet journey.

In April 2020, Shannon learned to knit and was drawn to the different garments and stitches that knitting could create, which crochet could not. Initially, Shannon found it challenging to create her own clothing but with her mum's help, she learned techniques for the things she really wanted to make, such as jumpers and tops.

In May 2024, Shannon made the decision, with a little push from friends, to quit her day job and dedicate herself to Blue Fern Yarns. Shannon is excited about this new chapter and hopes we shall all join her on this journey.

Blue Fern Yarns takes inspiration from nature, plants and scenery from Shannon's home in Norfolk in the UK. She currently dyes yarns in her home in Norwich which she shares with her fluffy black cat, Bennett.

In her spare time Shannon loves being with friends and family, savouring good food, heading out on little adventures, and settling in with knitting, crocheting, or a good book.

About Tea Cake + Make

Since childhood, Nicola Furey has always been a prolific crafter. The list of craft kits was never ending from candle making, cross stitching, calligraphy to flower pressing, needle felting and of course knitting. With a love of textiles and traditional needle crafts Nicola studied Fashion and Textiles at the University of Brighton where she specialised in Knitwear design and construction (Yes, you can get a degree in Knitting!) and went onto working in New York and London as a knitwear designer before moving into Fashion Buying. After working within the industry for over a decade, starting a family and finally moving out of London to Bedfordshire she decided she was ready to try and give her own thing a go and opened Tea Cake + Make in October 2019. Within a year her pretty yet practical canvas craft project bags, needle cases and accessories were being shipped internationally via her Etsy shop.

In 2021 Nicola released her first sock pattern and hasn't looked back. She has developed an obsession with stranded colourwork and is keen to share it with fellow knitters. Her designs have been featured in several publications including Laine's 52 weeks of Scrap yarn, Laine magazine and Knitting Magazine. In 2025 Nicola started taking Tea Cake + Make on the road to yarn festivals and shows to share her handmade items, knitting patterns and meet her customers in person. When asked why Tea Cake + Make for her business name, Nicola explains that they are her three favourite things!

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0802/7376/8740/files/woodland-joy-sock-kit-brown-knit-with-me-4075746.jpg?v=1789925595
lineage-socks-kit-a-p-classic-sock-pattern
Lineage Socks Kit | A&P Classic Sock + Pattern

Lineage Socks Kit

Ainsworth & Prin Classic Sock + Knitting Pattern

The Knitting Shed

Socks to keep your whole family's feet warm and snug.
