Flax has been spun into cloth for longer than almost any fibre on record, and its appeal has not changed: linen is cool, strong, and only improves with age. New skeins feel crisp, even stiff, then every wash relaxes the fabric further until it drapes like something inherited. Unusually, the fibre is stronger wet than dry, which is why linen pieces survive decades of laundering.
